The Orca class is a highly modular design. Several different modules provide a vast variety of mission profile capablilities (as listed in the module section above). The corvette was originally introduced during the latter half of the NTG Civil War as an antifighter corvette. Modules were initially designed to maximize crew survivability when the ship was irrecoverably damaged. Older ships had the disturbing tendency to precipitously vent atmosphere when their hull integrity fail, killing most if not all of the crew due to internal explosions, despite the heavy space-tight doors. Modules would allow sections of the ship to eject damaged components and sections, leaving the intact sections to drift on without fear of hull breach brought on by a nearby internal explosion.

Very soon, the corvettes and other ships with modules were having entire damaged modules swapped out for fresh ones while in star dock to minimize docking time and maximize combat time. A bright young engineer on Mars Ring suggested the alternative module design when HQ required a specialized ship to transport an emmisary through a contested sector of space. Not long after the successful transport mission, multiple designs for modules were initiated by Fleet Command.
