Finally got around to editing this post. Thanks to all ppl who voted for the name.
The Mantis class Heavy Fighter is the latest advancement in modular technology. The forward mandibles of this fighter may be configured to carry 2 dual Plasma Cannons for devastating firepower against a single target. Other modules include dual missile packs, a sensor/ECM/ECCM warfare package, 2 quad gattling slug cannons, and 2 double gattling laser cannons. One significantly unique design is the capability to mount two commando drop pods on the oversized mandibles, enabling the fighter to deliver boarding parties much faster than conventional assault cruisers or marine frigates.
The fighter is equipped with multidirectional maneuvering thrusters mounted on mobile wings. The wings shift position on the track wing (U shaped wing connecting all 4 primary foils), giving this fighter extreme maneuverability, even in tight quarters. Five pulse thrust vectoring engines provide forward thrust and additional maneuvering capability. The speed of this fighter is slightly above average, around the velocity of a standard ground attack fighter. Standard shielding and armor is fairly weak on such an expensive fighter, although additional shield generators may be mounted on weapon modules (the rectangular protrusion on the plasma cannon modules).
The Mantis is issued in limited numbers to specialized commando units in the NTG Navy. These squads are designed for pinpoint inflitration and destruction. For example, Crimson Hand Squadron recently captured a top rebel official in a daring low altitude urban raid, consisting of only 12 fighters. Half of these fighters were equipped with standard plasma and missile weaponry, while the other half were loaded with drop pods, each containing two commandos. The fighters proceeded to raid a heavily guarded rebel VIP shuttle, using the armed fighters as escort and suppression, while the other six fighters delivered their human payload directly onto the hull of the transport. The VIP shuttle naturally dove into the relative safety of the urban canyons, trying to evade the fighters. Unfortunately for the rebels, the maneuverability of the Mantis fighters enabled the commandos to box in the transport and escorts within the concrete confines of the city. The less maneuverable escorts were all destroyed while commandos cut through the armor of the transport, boarding with guns blazing. With only two commandos KIA due to flameout on the drop pod engine, the squadron managed to capture the transport and secure a rebel Admiral.
